Some good, and bad wine news out of France...
Earlier this week an unexpected storm in Chablis, Beaujolais and Cognac dropped 6-inches of hail on local vineyards, stripping the vines of their fruit and ravaging the plants. Some vineyards were devastated with 100% loss, with the storm resulting in a 6-10% loss across the whole region. After already suffering the results of a late frost and previous storms this year, local producers are going to be hard-pressed to salvage a profitable harvest.
On the other side of the coin, this week marks the opening of La Cité du Vin (City of Wine, the world's first wine-themed amusement park. This 10-storey marvel is home to 20 themed areas and exhibits, expert-led wine tours and a boat ride that shows what it was like to be a sea merchant, selling wine around the world. If you didn't have a reason to visit France and support the local wine economy, you do now!
